How to Eat Healthier? Focus on This One Thing

The other day, I met up with an old friend who’s also a nutritionist. We hadn’t seen each other in years, and you might assume we sat down to a kale salad, right? Well, not quite. We grabbed coffees, walked for hours soaking up some much-needed vitamin D, and eventually landed at Borough Market, where we enjoyed a prosciutto and sun-dried tomato focaccia, followed by a pistachio cannoli. And guess what? No guilt. No overthinking. Just an intentional, satisfying meal.

That’s because when you know what to eat and why, making food choices becomes easier. Instead of constantly questioning, “Is this good or bad?” or worrying about whether you’re “eating clean,” you can confidently enjoy your meals while still nourishing your body.

The Missing Ingredient: Knowledge

Too often, people feel overwhelmed by nutrition. One day carbs are the enemy, the next it’s dairy, then sugar. No wonder so many people struggle with what to eat! But here’s the thing: it’s not about avoiding certain foods—it’s about understanding them.

When you have a solid grasp of what your body needs, where nutrients come from, and how different foods support your health, you stop second-guessing every meal. Instead, you start making intentional, confident choices that fit your lifestyle.

A Smarter Way to Think About Food

Here’s my number 1 tip for making healthier meals:

Start by knowing what’s on your plate and what role it plays in your body.

That way, you can create meals that are both delicious and nourishing without unnecessary stress.

Take my breakfast, for example:

  • Fibre – chia seeds, homemade granola, seasonal fruit
  • Protein – Greek yogurt, kefir
  • Carbohydrates – fruit, granola (natural sugars in dairy)
  • Fats – chia seeds, flaxseeds, yogurt
  • Extra Wins – probiotics in kefir, phytonutrients in fruit, calcium in dairy and seeds

This isn’t about “eating perfectly.” It’s about understanding food so you can make it work for you. And when you do that, there’s room for all kinds of foods—yes, even focaccia and cannoli.

Food Freedom Starts with Education

I know this might not be exactly what most of us what to hear. We want a quick fix and learning isn’t always the most exciting thing to get into!

But…I have seen this over and over again with my clients. If you’re tired of feeling confused about what to eat, the solution is never another restrictive diet. It’s learning how to put together meals that support your energy, digestion, and long-term health—without overcomplicating things.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do. Whether it’s through nutrition coaching, personalised meal strategies, or helping you unlearn diet myths, my goal is to make food simpler, not stricter for you.
