BLOOM TURMERIC COFFEE
I’m sharing this quick recipe for the amazing turmeric infused coffee! Utrecht has been wet and grey recently, so a nice warm fluffy cup of the turmeric coffee makes the day a little bit brighter and with a bit more punch!
I know what you might think: “But, I love my coffee and still want to taste it!”. Don’t worry about it tasting too funky- turmeric actually goes surprisingly well with coffee and you can even leave out the sweetener. The taste is rich, delicately spiced and besides the caffeine kick, you also get some extra health benefits!
WHY USE TURMERIC?
I mentioned some of the turmeric benefits in my recipe for turmeric oats (it’s an amazing breakfast bowl, give it a go!). In this recipe I’m using turmeric/ curcumin tablets that are more potent (concentrated) than standard ground turmeric you find in the grocery store. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric that gives all the powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is an amazing antioxidant. Remember, bioavailability of curcumin is quite low, so adding a twist or two of fresh black pepper will increase its absorption by even 2000%!
If you haven’t tried turmeric in other foods than curry yet, try adding it to your diet – it’s great in scramble eggs, oats, smoothies… Or why not start with this coffee recipe? Strongly recommend: soothing background music and cozy sweater 🙂
Serving: makes 1 cup
Ingredients
1 double espresso (or Americano if prefer less intense taste)
1 curcumin tablet (this is the brand I currently use; or 1.5 tsp ground turmeric)
1 tsp MCT oil (or sub coconut oil)
1/4 cup plant based milk
1/8 cup water (or more/less to taste)
dash of pepper (if you use curcumin tablets, check the label- many of them have black pepper – peperine- included)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional)
Method
You have 2 method to choose from, both equally easy and quick:
Milk frother method:
Make espresso and stir in the turmeric and cinnamon. Mix well to combine (I find that matcha mixing brush works well for this!). Add water and set aside. Froth the milk with MCT oil and add to coffee. Add sweetener, if needed and extra cinnamon on top.
Classic pot method
In a small pot warm up milk and water until hot. Meantime make espresso. When milk/ water mix is hot, remove from the stove and add turmeric with all other ingredients and use a whisk to combine well and break down any bigger powder chunks. When espresso is ready, pour the milk mix over it and see if you want any sweetness. Enjoy immediately.
